Toledano & Chan's Phil Toledano: The gold ripple dial, the B/1, and chasing the frontier

Phil Toledano joins us back in the Time+Tide NYC Discovery Studio to talk about where Toledano & Chan go next, and the answer is gloriously, stubbornly simple: they never set out to be different; they set out to make what they loved. That distinction — chasing love over difference — is the whole philosophy behind one of independent watchmaking's most magnetic brands. We get into the DNA of the B/1 and what it actually means to live with one (spoiler: people email Phil when people wear it upside down, and he secretly loves it). Then we turn to the Ripple, with Phil breaking down the three things you need to know about this design: the new, smaller case proportions that let the dial finally breathe, the titanium build that transforms the wearing experience, and an 18-karat gold dial that refracts and shifts with the light in a way few dials manage. Phil also takes us back to the release of the Lapis Lazuli B/1 — four years of work between him and co-founder Alfred, who'd never even met in person before the watch dropped — and the moment it sold out while the two of them screamed at each other over the phone from opposite sides of the world.
